During 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured to book lodging after getting there, but once I got there, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate all night. Not knowing how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a bus into town and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, believing I might spend the evening in an establishment operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan at my peak to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, however, being a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more individuals with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared lost since a woman saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired if I was OK. I explained my situation and immediately she said I was welcome to sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided a meal: a leftover filled rolls she brought back her work shift. This gave me warm shower facilities and a protected spot to rest to spend the night.

With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a woman inviting a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.

I never did attending ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. I hope karma has rewarded her generosity many times over. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
