As Sunbathers Fled Attack, Viral Photo Captures Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, detected pops reverberating through the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, conversing with a pair who had run up the slope in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. It was a rescuer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to move in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and ambulance crews treating numerous those hurt.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the location of the attack transforming into a impromptu treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, including entering the ocean to assist people in distress.

After the events, messages of appreciation were shared. One post expressed thanks for the lifeguards who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome darkness”.

The group of lifeguards published a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion directed at our personnel,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the aim that it aids those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the team acted heroically from the instant the incident started through to late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving narratives, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a local official.

“The team show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned coastlines protected for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much positivity we have observed in the face of such evil.”
