The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
