Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Steady Crude Oil Supplies to the Indian Nation in Rebuff of US Sanctions

In a unambiguous message to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “unbroken” deliveries of crude oil to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in New Delhi and affirmed their partnership were “immune to outside influence.”

A Statement For the United States

Putin's comments, made on Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at western countries, that have tried to compel New Delhi into reducing its longstanding ties with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to recent US actions, notably the imposition of trade penalties on India due to its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a reliable source of fuel and anything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” he remarked. “We are ready to keep guaranteeing the steady flow of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, without referencing crude explicitly, echoed the sentiment by stating that “a stable energy base has been a strong and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia alliance.”

Defying US Interference

In the lead-up to the summit, during a media interview, Putin had questioned American pressure regarding India's oil imports. Putin stated, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, how can you deny India enjoy the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival represented his first journey to India after the onset of the war in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a visible attempt to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders remained intact.

An Unusual Greeting

Employing an unusual gesture, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin right off the plane. The two exchanged a hearty embrace akin to old friends before having a one-on-one meal together.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “built on mutual respect and strong faith.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Ties

The bilateral summit yielded several key agreements across defence and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the signing of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars per year by the target year.

The leaders also agreed to reshape their defence ties. Even as Russia remains India's biggest supplier of defence equipment, its share has reduced lately as India works to widen its procurement.

The joint statement highlighted cooperation in the co-development of sophisticated military systems, even if explicit mention of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were left out.

Overall, Russia and India affirmed that in the “ongoing challenging, difficult, and unpredictable international environment, their relationship continue to be durable to foreign influence.”
