The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
