Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
