Volcano Mahameru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Prompts Emergency Relocations

Indonesia's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on the island of Java, has erupted, covering several villages with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the highest level.

The mountain in the province of East Java released searing clouds of fiery ash and a combination of rock, lava and gas that moved up to 4 miles down its sides several times from midday to evening, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 1.2 miles into the sky, as stated by the nation's geological authority.

The eruptions that occurred throughout the day forced authorities to increase the mountain's warning status on two occasions, from the level three to the top level, the agency said. No deaths or injuries have been announced.
